Out of 79 Pinoy mathletes, Santa Rosa City contributed two gold and one silver medalS to the eight gold and 19 silver medals Philippines got in the 2019 Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge held in Singapore from July 6 to 9.

Holy Rosary College’s Elean R. Almazan snagged one of the gold medals of Team Philippines. Almazan is no stranger in the international math competition scene. The student had already won a bronze medal during the International Mathematics and Science Olympiad held in the Philippines.

Santa Rosa Science and Technology High School’s John Benedict M. Sanico also contributed a gold to the Philippines’ medal tally while Rainier Matthew L. Rodenas won a silver medal.  In addition, in a rare opportunity, Johann Paulo R. Campos, a grade 2 pupil of Chair of St. Peter School, was part of the Philippine Team.

On the other hand, Santa Rosa City’s Digs C. Salamat was one of the 24 math teachers who accompanied the students. The teachers attended seminars that not only honed their teaching skills, but also gave them tips on how to become creative teachers in order to influence more students to think and enjoy mathematics.

The team worked hard in order for each of them to bring home honor to the SDO and city. Every year, these children compete in an international competition. Through then Mayor Danilo Ramon S. Fernandez, now the Representative of the lone district of Santa Rosa, then Representative now Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas, SDS Helen A. Ramos, ASDS Rogelio F. Opulencia, and the whole family of SDO Santa Rosa City, the support of the city government and SDO is always felt.

SDO Santa Rosa City is indeed very happy and proud for the achievements of these kids. Their achievement is not only theirs but also for their schools, the division, the city, the region, the Department of Education, and the country as well. (Severa C. Salamat, Education Program Supervisor, SDO Santa Rosa City)
