To keep children safe by giving them quality capacity building in identifying and preventing potential risks online, the Department of Education, in partnership with Stairway Foundation, Inc. and UNICEF launched the Cybersafe Manuals last March 30 at the New Horizons Hotel.
“In real life, we protect our children, so why not we do it on the internet?” This was the statement of Mr. Edgar Marshall M. Brinas, co- writer of the Cybersafe Manuals at the book launch.
Mr. Brinas works as an Education Program Specialist at DepEd Tanauan City Division and is a National Trainer for Child Protection Policy. He also stated that both young people and adults should share responsibility in keeping everyone safe online, and that the manuals shall help facilitate the objective of limiting risks and potential dangers of abuse and cyber bullying among children.
The book launching was attended by Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro FSC of the Department of Education; Stairway Foundation Inc. Chair, Mr. Lars Jorgensen and DepEd Regional Directors Pons Menguito and Diosdado San Antonio, from NCR and CALABARZON respectively. Stairway Foundation Inc. initiated the project, in partnership with DepEd and was funded by UNICEF.
The lessons in the Cybersafe Manuals shall provide younger generations tips on how to manage their social media accounts, enjoy and keep safe while playing online games, avoid or react when cyber bullying occurs, and a lot more that shall make them responsible netizens.
The Cybersafe Manuals can now be accessed through the website www.cybersafe.asia. Mr. Brinas was also featured in two National TV news shows. He appeared with Mr. Ysrael Diloy, Senior Advocacy Officer of Stairway Foundation, Inc. in “News To Go” of GMA 7. They were interviewed by Howie Severino on that show. They also guested in the morning program of DZMM Teleradyo of ABS-CBN “Sakto” with Amy Perez and Mark Logan.
