The Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (BIOTA) – UP Los Baños Chapter, in collaboration with the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños conducted a workshop series on General Biology, Genetics and Energetics at the Institute of Biological Sciences, UPLB, College, Laguna on February 9, 16 and 23.
The said seminar workshop was aimed at enhancing the capability of science teachers in the province to teach biology under the K-12 curriculum.
The morning’s lecture was given by Dr. Nonnatus S. Bautista, Assistant Professor V from the Plant Biology Division at IBS. His discussion covered topics in bioenergetics specifically photosynthesis and cellular respiration which students find difficult to understand and for most teachers to present. In his lecture, Bautista discussed the important aspects and misconceptions on the topics mentioned.
During the afternoon session, activities which could be performed in the classroom were prepared for the teacher-participants to try. Such activities were facilitated by instructors and professors from the institute.
After the series of workshops, teachers went home confident and motivated with their deepened understanding of the topics discussed plus the take home activities they could perform inside their own classrooms. (Emmanuel Revilla, Teacher I, Division of San Pablo City)
