Lipeños sweep 2018 MMC team categories to finish as over-all CALABARZON champs

Coming off a runner-up performance last year, team Lipa has improved its stint in the Regional finals of the Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) by finishing as the Over-all Champion, snatching all four gold medals in the 2018 oral competitions, March 2.

De La Salle Lipa (DLSL) Grade 9 students’ Czhean Klyde Espiritu and Angelo Vince Perez and St. Philomena Academy of Lipa, Inc.  Grade 6 pupils’ Benjamin Jacob and Timothy Lawrence Andal wowed the rest of THE CALABARZON participants as they copped first places with perfect scores.

Moreover, DLSL Grade 10 Kiana Alecandra Garing and Jose Luis Paolo Domingo and Gabriel Symone Dalangin and James Gabriel Valencia, Grade 5 from Stonyhurst Southville International School-Malarayat, reigned topnotchers to complete Lipa’s unblemished slate.

Perez was also hailed as champion of the individual-written category of MMC for Grade 9 while Alecs Andrea Miacah Casumbal of the Canossa Academy-Lipa excelled as the first runner-up in the same category for Grade 10.

“It feels fulfilling because we were able to accomplish something more than just winning. We were able to leave something memorable not only for us but also  to our coaches, parents, and contest facilitators. It felt like beating the contest rather than beating other teams,” quipped Perez.

He also shared that he wasn’t actually expecting anything from the contest as he had been forced to skip some of his trainings due to sickness and prioritize his academic requirements. However, the questions seemed to be familiar as he had been exposed to them already in the past which eventually paved the way to his convincing victory.

Meanwhile, Adore Villafria, Regional Education Program Supervisor in Math, welcomed the participants during the opening program held in Bauan Technical High School and challenged the pupils and students to steer a domino effect which will make their fellow classmates get involved as well on varied learning activities in math despite difficulties.

He also called for teachers to believe in their value and underscored the importance of mentors in the system. “Don’t you ever forget your worth. You are a conduit being used for God’s greater glory to impact future generations,” he remarked.

The Grade 6 and 10 mathletes will advance to the National Finals to be held in Metrobank Plaza, Makati City on March 23-24, 2018. (Billy Rei M. Pagba, Teacher II, Inosloban-Marawoy Integrated NHS)
