Home of Independent Young Artists (HIYAS) Teatro, Lucsuhin National High School’s theatre group composed of Grade 11 and 12 students, outshone three other groups after bagging three major awards from the first inter-school theatre tournament organized by Cavite State University’s Student Artists Society (StArS).

StArS’ “Salu-salo Entablado” gathered student artists and performers from Lucsuhin NHS, Saint Jude Parish School (Tanghalang San Hudas Taddeo), Paliparan National High School (Teatro Paliparan) and Philippine Merchant Marine School (Teatro Marino) for a friendly competition which showcased their theatrical excellence.

After running for five days during CvSU-main’s Intramurals Week, HIYAS Teatro’s debut performance of “Thalia Melphomene” (Dalawang Mukha ng Tao) earned the Ginintuang Pluma/ Best Original Play and Best Stage Performance awards, October 9-13. Rafael Varias was hailed Best Actor, adding up to Lucsuhin NHS’ glory.

“Thalia Melphomene” is written and directed by Renante R. Balanza and co-directed by  Rachelle L. Alcedo, HIYAS Teatro’s adviser and Senior High School English teacher. Varias (Harvey), Cristine Tibayan (Melody), Ma. Elaine Tanieca (Monica), Anjelica Yongque (Jessica), Nelvi  Dearos (Nanay Rebecca), Ronnie Petallo (Julius), Fortunato Medes Jr. (SPO4 de Guzman), and Junnel Andalis (Aling Ruby) gave life to the story which tackled how fate complicates and plays with human emotions and how eventually, humans are still responsible in choosing their path to the brand of happiness they wish to reach or attain.

Following the triumph, HIYAS Teatro, in cooperation with the General Parents-Teachers Association (GPTA) and the Supreme Student Government (SSG), plans on empowering the promotion of performance arts among public school students by conducting fund raising activities in the form of theatre plays starting December 2.

Alcedo also stressed how significant the steadfast support of School Head Perlita A. Villanueva and SHS Coordinator Alma D. Acuna was in establishing the theatre group which serves as a venue and means for students to explore and exhibit their theatrical skills since October 2016.  (Rey Ann M. Maramag/ Abee Faye P.
