MTALC amplifies Lipa Math mentors’ competencies, supports Project 2ME Phase 3

To be able to improve teacher’s instructional  competence,  apply Math activities to the new contexts of learning, and design appropriate intervention to address the gap in learning basic skills in Mathematics, the Math Mentors of Lipa with the Curriculum Implementation Division continued to upgrade the Math mentor’s skills via Division Seminar – Workshop on Math Calculations through Project 2ME: Mathematics Mentors Education Phase 3 at Lipa City Colleges Auditorium and LCC Silvercrest Senior High School Building on  May 29 – 31.

This division–initiated program of enhancing teacher’s instructional competence was headed by the Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Ludy N. Pasagui, Curriculum and Implementation Division Chief Dr. Lorna T. Medrano and Education Program Supervisor in Math Dr. Theresa G. Excond.

354 public elementary school teachers and 102 Junior High School Teachers of the division participated the training.

Raymundo S. Poral – Education Program Supervisor of the South District discussed topics on Problem Based Learning and Time Measurement while Dr. Julie G. Hermosura talked on Learning Math Their Way.

These topics opened an avenue for Math Teachers to innovate in class utilizing the learned skills which would introduced children into more interactive and easy way of learning Math.

“Teachers of today cater 21st century learners who are very inquisitive, innovatively eager and engaged themselves interactively, so the Math mentors should empower themselves to address the needs of the leaners,” explained Poral in an interview after his talk.

In addition, Differentiated Activities, Strategies in Teaching Math, Creating Interactive Games in PowerPoint, Solving Word Problems with the Bar Model Methods – Twin Goals and Solving Problems Using Block Models and Bars were covered by the School heads and teacher-trainers to furtherly equip and update the Math Mentors of some Math issues.

Moreover, Math Shortcuts MTAP Related Questions and Techniques were discussed by some Math experts led by Ms. Michelle A. Sibayan to prepare the mentors in training pupils/students in preparation for the DepEd Metrobank MTAP Math Challenge.

“We are very thankful to the Schools Division of Lipa and the Math Teachers Association of Lipa City (MTALC) chaired by EPS Math Theresa G. Exconde for continuously providing us teachers with this kind of endeavor which surely benefits us and the school children under our care,” said Master Teacher II Mercedita H. Valdez, a participant.

Other topics such as Multiple Intelligences in Differentiated Activities, Inequalities, Absolute Value, Functions Math Technology and Some Techniques, Working with Data Using Pie Graphs, Developing Number Sense – Integers, Core Strands of Grade 7 and 8 Math Teaching software and other Math – related topics were developed to resource Math Mentors essential skills that can be used in their day to day encounter with the numbers. The 2017 Division Seminar – Workshop on Math Calculations through Project 2ME: Mathematics Mentors Education Phase 3 is the third leg of the training which was launched on April 2016 and  continued in October the same year to provide Math mentors of Lipa the necessary skills in  teaching Math.
