CALABARZON holds 2017 Regional Basic Education Summit; San Antonio delivers SORA

The Department of Education (DepEd) CALABARZON conducted its 2017 Regional Basic Education Summit among 223 participants from 20 divisions held in Lipa City, last July 14.

Regional Director Diosdado M.  San Antonio led the event as he proclaimed his State of the Region Address (SORA) among the participants including the Presidents of the SUCs, Municipal and City Mayors Federation, Principals, Parents and Students Federation and Private Schools Federation. Other attendees were the Regional Directors of DILG, NEDA, DSWD, TESDA who composed the Regional Committee on Quality Education and other public and private partners in Region IV-A.

The event aimed to bring DepEd CALABARZON and its internal and external stakeholders into the baton of the Department guided by the institution’s framework of providing quality, access, relevance and liberating education for all.

During the presentation, RD San Antonio gave more highlights on the institution, basic education performance, basic education milestone and DepEd CALABARZON future directions.

He pointed out that DepEd serves over 3 million learners with various achievements and accomplishments specifically in terms of pupils and teachers’ development. In fact, the regional office being ISO 9001:2015 Certified has improved the participation rate of school-going age population and proportion of learners completing school.

RD San Antonio also reported that for this school year 2017-2018, the teacher-pupil ratio is 1:40 which has shown a relevant increase in the number of installed public elementary, secondary and senior high school teachers. Performance of pupils and statistics in NAT (Total Test) showed an MPS of 57.89 in Elementary and 44.45  MPS in Secondary, in CY 2014.

“Not totally perfect but it is quite progressive,” expressed RD San Antonio with ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog field reporter  Mariz Lacsamana . He further explained the various accomplishments of DepEd CALABARZON despite of the few problems and concerns related to lack of school buildings and resources both in elementary and high school levels due to various procurement and bidding procedures eventhough there is already allotted budget.

There was also an increase of number of passers in the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test under the Alternative Learning System (ALS), the Director cited.

On the other hand, severely wasted and wasted K-G6 children benefitted from the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP). Data showed that almost 168,000 wasted pupils and 86,000 severely wasted pupils were provided free nutritious food in their respective schools in Region IV-A to attain 100% normal nutritional status among them in every school year.

Aside from this, DepEd CALABARZON continues to support the teachers and learners through access and scholarship program. Moreover, more learners and teachers in private schools including Senior High School are being assisted.

The region further aims to provide complete basic education in all types of learners, thus, it strengthens Madrasah Program, Special and IP education regardless of gender, religion, race and ability.

RD San Antonio also enumerated various national and international winnings of CALABARZON. Among them, he emphasized that CALABARZON stretches their competitive streak, ruling in NSPC for 5th straight year, 1st Runner-up Palarong Pambansa 2017 (41 gold, 57 silver and 57 bronze), 20 Divisions unite in TEA Governance Forum, and more achievements related to Continuous Improvement Program, Planning and Research, Physical Science, ROBOTICS and National Science & Technology Fair.

DepEd CALABARZON also soared high in the international level. One of its best achievements was being chosen by the Australia Awards Fellowship as the Lighthouse Region of Inclusive Education in the Philippines, being a Model of Inclusive Education with shared vision and mission to attain the Authentic Implementation of Inclusive Education.

In addition, RD San Antonio stated that by 2022, CALABARZON will have nation-loving and competent lifelong learners who are able to respond to challenges and opportunities through quality, accessible, relevant and liberating K to 12 Program delivered by a modern, professional, pro-active, nimble, trusted and nurturing DepEd.

Through the support and participation of all the stakeholders specifically those who attended the event, DepEd CALABARZON also aims to pursue Regional Education Development Plan to keep its flame burning and shining not only in the entire country but also in the whole world.  (Gina M.
