A Student’s Testimony

I am Nefthy Castro, 15 years old and a Grade 10 student. As this is my last year in Junior High School, I am almost aware of how the opening of classes is done in my school Cavite National High School. But I am not the only one sharing my experience during the first day of school. I have a friend and a classmate named Jervin Monzon. Jervin is blind. I have been guiding and assisting him since we were in Grade 6. We have been friends for so long and went through hard and good circumstances. A lot of people think that Jervin’s disability is a burden to my studies. But I feel and think otherwise, because I am doing it sincerely.

Probably, a lot of people including my classmates don’t know that Jervin is helping me too. Sometimes he helped me in financial matters but he’s not doing it because he wanted to pay “my service”. I know that he treats me as a friend and somehow it’s his way of saying thank you.

During the opening of classes, I am not the only one who assisted Jervin. My classmates and teachers did their best to make Jervin at ease for the start of this school year. We are always classmates since then and I know the efforts that our teachers exerted to help Jervin in his studies. They sometimes have an allotted time to teach him one on one.

As I was observing the activities in school on the first day, it is a typical sight to see that some of the students are not yet settled in their respected classrooms. But what I also observed were the tents and help desks that assisted the teachers, students and parents about their concerns. That was really helpful especially for the students who are still new in the school.

One of my teachers told us that Mr. Francis Cesar Bringas, the Assistant Regional Director diligently observed the opening of classes in our school. Mr. Bringas and Mr. Celedonio Balderas Jr., the OIC Schools Division Superintendent roamed around the school and observed how the start of classes was carried out.

Jervin and I had a good start in this school year. Our teachers are helpful and understanding to my friend’s situation and I am looking forward to have an enjoyable year. (Nefthy Castro, G10-Antonio Luna, Cavite National High School)
