SDS Talavera empowers School Heads

“We are not doing things for compliance. We are doing things for DepEd and our schools,” said Dr. Catherine P. Talavera, Schools Division Superintendent, during the 2nd Division Management Committee Meeting held at Kamayan sa Palaisdaan Resort and Hotel last March 15.

“People don’t get promoted for doing their jobs well. They get promoted by demonstrating their potential to do more,” she exclaimed, challenging the school heads to improve the schools and provide quality education for the young Tayabense learners.

Talvera also underlined the learning leaders, urging them to intensify the reading program in schools as well. Other division unit chiefs were also given opportunities to talk on significant issues.

In relation to DepEd’s issuance of a moratorium on field trips, Administrative Officer V Conrad Gabarda discussed DO 73, S. 1985 titled, “Discouraging Fund- Raising from Student and Teachers’ Activities”. He reiterated the need to comply with department orders for the safety of both the learners and teachers. On the other hand, HRMO II Josefina Oabel presented the new vacancies in the division.

Internal guidelines and other updates on Budget preparation were explained by Budget Officer III Benjamin Millares. He, with the help of Administrative Assistant I Maria Jobelle Malijan, highlighted the exemplary performance in budget realignment of Maria Gracia Naynes, TIC of Pandakaki Elementary School who was given a certificate of recognition.

Meanwhile, updates on DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) and Enterprise Human Resource Information System (EHRIS) were provided by Information Technology Officer Kendrick Cabriga. He also launched an innovative clients’ feedback form, a new online system that is open for all visitors arriving at the division office.

SGOD Chief Edwin Rodriguez announced the new school building to be given to selected schools namely Domoit, Gibanga, Ipilan- Alitao, Lalo, Malao-a/ Calantas, Alsam, Masin and Mate Elementary Schools, FELES, TWCS II, TWCS III, LPNHS , and RQMNHS. He also disclosed that almost all the land titles of schools are not owned by DepEd yet, and urged the school heads to work on the matter.

As part of the advocacy of President Rodrigo Duterte, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Edwin Paul Navarro emphasized drug testing activity in the work place and schools for a drug-free DepEd.

In the afternoon session, CID Chief Imelda Raymundo presented the performance of schools in the quarterly exams. She discussed salient matters on curriculum improvement.

During the Superintendent’s Time, Talavera briefly discussed numerous issues concerning the Year-End Accomplishment Report/ School Report Card, DO No. 48, S. 2017 on National Observances promoting love of country, conduct of parents’ Profiling, School- Based Feeding Program, Intensive Child Mapping, Wellness Program, Stakeholder/Community Activities, 2017 Adoption Consciousness Celebration, Strengthening of School Reading Program, Brigada Eskwela, Child Protection Policy, Adopt-a-School Program and Children’s Television Act of 1997.

The superintendent also announced the new Inspectorate Teams created separately for Canteen Management and TEA Governance, and the Professional Learning Community (PLC) composed of school heads and TICs which is divided into seven school groups, six elementary and one secondary.

Time on Task Policy was given great emphasis in Talavera’s presentation, calling the school heads’ cooperation in determining the actual number of face-to-face encounter of the teachers with the learners.

At the middle of her talk, the school heads lauded Talavera when she announced the 11 duplicators she approved for distribution to selected schools. Recently, she dispersed high-quality sound system to all the schools in the division in time for graduation. Now, she is targeting TV in all classrooms in the division of Tayabas.

Election of officers for the Association of School Heads also took place. The elected officers were Dennis Labita as president, Dr. Joy Buban as vice-president, Ma. Lina Ayangco as secretary, Elpidia Palayan and Ronan Ranillo as treasurers, Roderick Hugo and Waldymar Pasacsac as auditors, Lea Cosico and Julie Labita as Communication Officers, Patria Cabriga and Natalia Andaya as Project Managers, Lea Clado and Honesto Caagbay as Peace and Order Officers, Merlinda Buncayo as muse, and Adrian Naynes as escort.

At the end of the conference, Talavera called for the school leaders to embrace liberating education advocated by DepEd Secretary Leonor M. Briones to ensure Quality, Accessible and Relevant Basic Education for All. (Richelle F. Quintero, Education Program Supervisor, SDO-Tayabas)
