Proposal Defense, Checked! Mixed emotions lingered in the hearts of 21 teaching and non-teaching personnel from SDO Calamba City. Some called it –  Judgement Day! But nevertheless, after that one-day academic discussion, everyone had made it smiling and optimistic because, as expected, the proposed studies were geared toward improved basic education services.

DepEd Calamba City has been known already as one of the divisions inclined in research. In fact, it has earned awards from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on its Managing Large Class. This was cited as Best Research in the National Level held in Koronadal, Cotobato. In 2015 and 2016, it was ranked as one of the top three finalists during the Gawad Patunugot under Best Action Research Category.

With the motivation of SDS Dr. Eugenia R. Gorgon and inspiration given by the people in the Region through the leadership of RD Dr. Diosdado San Antonio and the PPRD Team, DepEd Calamba City has been privileged to have 10 initial papers which had been approved under Basic Education Research Fund Facility. The Division had three completed research projects during the first cycle (2015-2016).

As early as 7:00 AM, the researchers from TEAM CALAMBA had arrived at the National Educators Academy of the Philippines (NEAP) in Malvar, Batangas. Prior to this meeting, a technical assistance was provided to the researchers as regards to the process and content of presentation.

“You are chosen among the hundreds of papers submitted,” the overjoyed statement of Dr. Lilia Ricero, EPS of Policy, Planning and Research Division said in her welcome remarks. “All over the Philippines, Region IV-A CALABARZON ranked 1st in the utilization of Research Fund. We encourage all concerned to submit. Hindi po kami tumitingin sa Division. We focus on the content and relevance based on the National Basic Education Research Agenda and at the same time the format stated in DepED Order no 43. S. 2016,” Dr. Ricero added. She further articulated the call for papers will be until February 14, 2017 to maximize the utilization of available fund downloaded to each Region amounting to two million pesos.

During the short breakout sessions, the group of researchers were informed about the BERF guidelines. Again, Dr. Ricero reiterated the expected deliverables per tranche prior to the downloading of the approved fund to the lead researcher. Meanwhile, Ms Katrien DS. Dagmang from PPRD Secretariat capacitated the Senior Education Program Specialists of the Planning and Research on the monitoring process and provision of technical assistance for the ongoing research projects.

The very dynamic CALABARZON Regional Director Dr. Diosdado San Antonito, known to many as Sir Dads – a research guru, all the more inspired the researchers with his powerful words. “CALABARZON will have nothing to go but continue to go up and up in all aspects that the government is putting in place,” he said. Research is very close to his heart. He further explains, “Kung bakit gustong gusto ko na mag-research ang bawat isa – those researchers, who are doing the real research and not just to earn their degree, can sustain efforts for improvement. They would like to ensure that any initiatives are anchored on empirical data. Hence, they tend to be very systematic thinker and critical. They are the kind of professionals that we need. We do no just want to understand our situations and problems. We want to change; we want to improve and try out things beyond what is normally done to push for higher learning outcomes. We will never be happy in the status quo.”

In his parting statements, he congratulated the participants and challenged them to write paper under peer reviewed journal. True enough, the day was a meaningful learning experience for TEAM CALAMBA Researchers and to all other participants. (Randy D. Punzalan -SrEPS-PRU/ Division Information Officer, SDO Calamba City)
