Math athlete Christopher Neil C. Defensor of Imus Pilot Elementary School (IPES) displayed computational prowess, earning himself a bronze medal in the 10th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for primary school students held on Nov. 25-29, in Alfonso, Cavite.

Helping placed the country at second place overall in the Mathematics category, Defensor  joined other Filipino math and science savvy kids who totaled 62 medals: 3 gold, 10 silver and 20 bronze in Mathematics; and 8 silver and 21 bronze in Science.

The pride of Imus, who is also the city’s outstanding elementary pupil, revealed he underwent intensive trainings under IPES Math teachers and the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG). He said he also coupled his training with discipline and hard work in preparation for the IMSO stint.

“After being one of the top scorers  and  passing the stages of intensive training program last April 1-4 at Angel’s Hills, Tagaytay City, I attended another series of Math Olympiad Summer Training Program at Arellano University-Jose Abad Santos Campus five days a week from April 5 – May 16. As one of the top 15% highest scorers, it paved me to some International Competitions,” Defensor said.

“It’s a dream come true for me to be part of the Philippine Mathematics team. Many are called but few are chosen to be part of IMSO,” said Defensor who was coached by Ms. Josephine P. Canlas and Ms. Raquel I. Cabradilla.

The 10th IMSO drew more than 250 participants from Brunei Darussalam, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines, which is hosting it for the second time.

The contest was organized by the MTG-Philippines under Dr. Simon Chua.

It was co-organized by the City of Taguig and supported by the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Science and Technology- Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).

Earlier in August, Defensor also clinched a bronze medal in the International Mathematics Contest held in Singapore where Filipino students ended China’s dominance in an international math competition, bagging 161 medals to rule the competition.
